Choose Your Style
Trucker Hats & Snapbacks
To prevent your perfectly fitting ball cap, trucker hat or snapback from shrinking, opt for hand-washing. Follow these instructions for hat made of cotton twill, acrylic, and polyblend materials. If your hat is a wool blend, proceed directly to the felt and wool section.
Soaking Step: Fill a bucket with cool or slightly warm water, and add a teaspoon of mild, bleach-free detergent. Swirl the water to create suds and soak the hat for 15-30 minutes.
Rinsing: Rinse the hat under cool running water until all the suds are completely washed away. Gently squeeze out excess water without twisting or pulling.
Reshaping and Air Drying: Fill the hat with paper towels (or use a small ball or bowl) to achieve the desired shape for your hat, then allow the hat to air dry away from direct sunlight.
Pro tip: If your hat is completely soiled, pre-treat stains with a bleach-free stain remover before soaking. Test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the cleaning solution won't cause any damage or discoloration. Then, boom. good as new!
Straw Material Hats
Straw is a material that absorbs moisture easily, so it's advisable to use water sparingly when cleaning your straw hat. Here's the process for cleaning a straw hat.
- Start by using a clean, dry cloth to wipe away surface dirt and debris from your hat. If your hat is light-colored, opt for a white or light-colored microfiber cloth.
- For a more thorough cleaning of your hat, dampen the cloth and apply a small amount of dish soap or a mild, bleach-free detergent. Gently clean the hat using a circular motion, being careful not to damage the weave. Prior to proceeding, test a small area of the hat to ensure it's safe to continue.
- Allow the hat to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Straw hats come in various weaves, with some being more water-resistant and durable than others. If available, follow the cleaning instructions on the label.
Pro tip: If regular dish soap or mild detergent proves insufficient, consider using a specialized straw hat cleaner.
Beanies & Knit Hats
Many knit hats and beanie style hats nowadays are crafted from synthetics (such as acrylic) or a combination of synthetic and natural fibers. Check the label to identify the materials used in your hat.
Synthetic and blended hats are typically safe for machine washing within a delicates bag. In the case of a wool blend hat, refer to the felt and wool section for cleaning instructions.
Here's a guide on cleaning a knit hat:
- Machine wash the hat with a gentle detergent in cold water along with like-colored items. Washing the hat in a full load yields optimal results.
- Lay the hat flat on a towel for air drying in a cool, well-ventilated area.
Pro tip: Alternatively, you can hand-wash the hat using mild detergent. Allow it to soak for 30-60 minutes, gently massaging the hat to remove oils, stains, and debris. Afterward, gently squeeze out excess water and lay it flat on a towel for air drying.
Felt & Wool Hats
Whether it's your cherished paperboy hat or an embellished fedora style hat reserved for special occasions, there comes a time when it needs a bit of sprucing up.
When dealing with felt and wool blends, a gentle touch is crucial. Here's a guide on cleaning a felt hat:
- Wet a microfiber cloth and employ gentle, circular motions to brush the surface clean. This method not only eliminates stains and debris but also helps prolong the hat material's lifespan.
- Lay the hat flat to dry in a well-ventilated area.
If your hat features a removable satin lining, take it out and soak it in a bowl of soapy water, massaging the material to remove stains. Lay the lining flat to dry. If the lining isn't detachable, spot clean it with a damp cloth.
Pro tip: For stubborn stains or felt hats incorporating fur, opting for professional cleaning is the optimal choice.
More Headwear Care Tips:
- To safeguard against fading, store your hat crafted from woven, felt, and straw away from direct sunlight. Refrain from using harsh cleaning chemicals that may harm the hat material.
- Avoid placing any type of hat in the dryer or using high heat for drying, as this can lead to damage. Dry cleaning is generally not recommended for hats, as it may distort interlinings and brims.
- When storing hats over an extended period, fill the crown with tissue paper to maintain brim support. For brimmed hats worn regularly, hang them up or place them on a flat surface to prevent the brim from becoming bent or warped.
